Globally, the mining sector currently experiencing an unprecedented growth. With this global expansion, the technical skills that have heretofore been supporting the South African mining industry have been shrinking as people migrate in search of new opportunities. The shrinking pool of skills is likely to result in a negative growth of the mining sector in South Africa, which will impact negatively on the South African economy.

Unless an integrated effort is developed to rebuild the skills to support the mining industry, the South African economy will continue to suffer as a result of declining mine production and increasing cost of mining in South Africa.
