With nearly 90 percent of U.S. households subscribing to either satellite- or cable-TV services, satellite providers are locked in a battle with cable providers for customer dollars. Meanwhile, technological advances and business alliances are changing the nature of competition among TV-service providers to encompass broadband Internet access and telephony. This report discusses the findings of Lyra's DTV View survey of more than 600 existing users of satellite-TV services, half of whom previously subscribed to cable-TV services at their current homes.
Weather-related reception problems ranked as the top reason satellite users would consider switching from satellite to cable-TV. Commonly called rain fade, rain or snow may interrupt satellite-TV reception. Viewing TV without rain fade is cited as the biggest inducement for subscribers to make the switch to cable-TV services (see figure).

A charter subscription price of $4,000 is in effect for all orders received on or before September 30, 2004. After September 30, 2004, the regular subscription price of $5,000 applies.
