Company Introduction

NIRJAFT is situated on the southern fringe of the metropolis of Calcutta known as Tollygunge. It was originally established over an area measuring 9150 sq. m. Since then it has undergone both horizontal as well as vertical expansion. During the early sixties an additional three storied building was constructed to provide added laboratory floor space. During the Vth five year plan and Rolling plan periods in mid seventies two adjoining premises measuring around 2260 sq.m and 3860 sq.m. respectively along with old residential type buildings were purchased. The institute at present has a total plot area of 15, 858 sq. m. in which the laboratory campus covers 11, 901 sq.m. and staff quarter campus measures around 3957 sq.m. Besides, a new plot of land measuring 1770.67 sq.m., adjoining the above campus has been acquired by the institute in April 1997. The institute is equipped with modern laboratories having a wide range of sophisticated instruments, equipments, machinery, experimental textile mill etc.. Mandate To carry out basic and technological research on jute and allied fibres. To promote production of good quality fibres. To upgrade the fibre and the product quality. To find diversified uses of plant fibres, their agricultural by-products and industrial wastes in large scale and decentralised sectors. To act as a repository of scientific and technology information on jute and allied fibres. To act as a centre of human resource development in relation to jute & allied fibres and establish linkages among different scientific and industrial organisations through exchange of scientific and technological knowledge. Major Research Programme 1 Extraction & Quality improvement of fibre & Evaluation of fibre properties. 2 Development of Technologies for Diversification of jute products (woven & knitted). 3 Development of Diversified value added nonwoven products. 4 Utilization of Agricultural residues of jute & allied fibres for conservation of energy and preparation of value added products. 5 Transfer of Technology.
