Moonflower Oils and Spices co., Ltd. was set up in 2004 to commercialise essential oils produced in Vietnam. The essential oil industry in the country evolved out of the exploitation of natural forest products, and plays an important role in the subsistence of rural households, particularly those in upland areas. The collection, cultivation, trade and processing of herbs, leaves, bark, seeds and fruits provide employment to thousands of people. Traditional production methods for essential oils do not always guarantee the quality level demanded by the international market. Through its office in Ho Chi Minh City, Moonflower is closely monitoring the production in various provinces : Yen Bai, Tuyen Quang, Lang Son and Nghe An in the north, Long An, Binh Phuoc in the south and Lam Dong and Dac Nong in Central Highlands. Its projects include reforestation of certain areas and cultivations of trees and grasses according to organic standards, without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. It also plans to help in developing building and operating better steam distillation plants. For Vossen & Co (*****) Moonflower acts as a local controller, applying the EC and USA rules for organic certification to all stages of the production : from the cultivation and collection of the raw material to the distillation, the packing, handling and storage, and the shipment of the essential oils. In 2010 we have also started importing essential oils and selling to the Vietnamese market. So in addition to the local products, we can also provide some oils from Nepal, India, and other origins. In 2011 we plan to start a seed farm in order to provide farmers with genuine Organic seeds.
