Company Introduction
Lam Soon Malaysia began operation in 1958 milling and refining copra. The oil extracted was used to make laundry soap and cooking oil. The earliest branded products then were Axe and Labour, names that stood for the Lam Soon work ethic. From this humble beginning, Lam Soon progressively diversified into the manufacture of toilet soap (under the brand Orchid), margarines and shortening using palm oil as raw material. 1970 saw Lam Soon becoming the pioneer of the palm oil refining industry when it built Malaysia's first oil fractionation plant to manufacture cooking oil. Recognizing the potential of palm oil, Lam Soon moved upstream and established plantations in both East and Peninsular Malaysia. By 1985 Lam Soon's oil and soap manufacturing businesses were restructured into Lam Soon (M) Berhad to comply with the country's New Economic Policy. In 1987, Lam Soon (M) Berhad and Lion Corporation Japan incorporated Southern Lion as an equal joint venture. The Company is based in Tebrau, Johor and produces detergents, home care products and markets oral and beauty care products. Southern Nissin Bio-Tech Sdn Bhd was set up in 1994 as a joint venture between Lam Soon (M) Berhad, Nisshin Oil Mills Ltd and Mitsubishi Corporation Japan to develop and market special edible oil made from bio-technology process. Further downstream was realised when Lam Soon (M) Berhad entered into a joint venture with Akzo Nobel, a Dutch chemical multinational, to set up an oleochemical complex for the manufacture of distilled fatty acids and refining glycerin for the international market. In 1997, Lam Alliance International Ltd was incorporated in Hong Kong as a subsidiary of Lam Soon (M) Berhad to import and market beauty soap in the people's republic of China. 1998 marked another milestone for Lam Soon (M) Berhad, when it moved its production of cooking oil and manufacturing of soap to its new location in Teluk Panglima Garang, Selangor. The new plant is equipped with modern machinery and fully computerized cranes capable to handle more efficient operation to meet the diverse customer's requirement. The new plant is also certified with ISO 9002 standard for both packing of cooking oil, margarine and manufacturing of soap and adheres to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) for production of soap. By 1999, Lam Soon acquired Lam Soon Edible Oils Sdn. Bhd. (formerly known as Pacific Edible Oil Industries ) - edible oil refinery company, and Pacific Soap Manufacturing - a soap chip manufacturer, integrating overall production capabilities and efficiencies. In November 2001, we relocated to new corporate headquarters at the Hicom-Glenmarie Industrial Park. This features upgraded facilities to cater for the continuous growth of the Lam Soon Group of Companies. Lam Soon (M) Berhad's state-of-the-art finishing line located in Telok Panglima Garang, Selangor began operation in mid 2002. Apart from its high performance, it has many other unique features and capable of producing soap of single formulations into different shapes, sizes or wrapping designs. The plant has been certified with ISO 9001:2000 in recognition of our continuous efforts towards product Quality and Customer Satisfaction. Most recently, it has also been certified with ISO 14001 in recognition of our compliance to an Environmentally Friendly Management System. With effect from 1 January 2003, Lam Soon (M) Berhad restructured its operations whereby its subsidiary, Lam Soon Edible Oils Sdn Bhd (LSEO) would undertake its operating activities, including the businesses of manufacturing, marketing, sales, trading, distribution and export of edible oils and fats, household and personal care products. Thereafter, Lam Soon (M) Berhad became an investment company, organised for acquisitions and growth. Today, we have established a fully integrated group of companies in palm oil industry from plantation / oil milling to refinery, soap and detergents manufacturing to oleochemicals and marketing distribution of branded consumer products.
