The insect secretes through its pores a gummy substance, which hardens into a protective covering called lac. This raw lac is processed to make many kinds of lac products such as seedlac, bleached shellac and lac dye. Due to its specific characteristics, shellac can be applied to a wide variety of uses such as coating pills, fruits & vegetables and candies. It is used as a component in making phonograph records, sealing wax, fireworks, electrical insulators, hair spray, no-rub floor polishes and a finish for bowling alleys.
