Chede Cooperative Union

Company Introduction

The ?Chede Agricultural Development Project? was launched in 1986 by the Muambong rural community in the Bakossi region of Cameroon?s South West Province in response to the severe economic crisis that hit Cameroon and other African countries in the mid-eighties.

The project has since evolved into a self-financed and self-powered community development venture seeking to improve production standards and techniques, reduce post-harvest losses, and diversify into commercial agriculture by encouraging the production of fresh fruit and vegetable for export to Europe.

Our village-centric (or ?village-first?) development approach aims to level the disparities between Africa?s urban and so-called ?rural sector? by focusing the bulk of public investment and development services on meeting the needs of the majority population living in villages. Our growing network of local offices provides training and advice to rural farmers, assistance with upgrading farming technologies, food processing services, and local, regional and export marketing support.

The lessons accumulated by Chede in its community development initiatives are now being extended as an indigenous development model to other African countries. In 2009, the Chede network began operating in Ghana. The network is expected to extend over time to other African countries, notably to Angola and Gabon.

A supportive network of Chede international development entities (NGOs) in Europe is also growing with a view to promoting the products of small and medium-sized exporters on the global market and providing them with the technologies and equipment needed for quality production and processing of their produce.

The Chede International Development Network currently consists of the Chede Union of Agricultural Co-operative Societies (CHEDE LTD), based in Cameroon, its affiliated co-operative societies, notably the Muambong Farmer
