Company Introduction
According to the listing, of ?the 4,813 Auburns sold in 1933 this is the ONLY surviving coupe (in any engine configuration).? Since this is the only surviving car of its kind, it is impossible to find a comparable model, which brings us to our conundrum: finding detailed historical information about the car.First some background on the Auburn Automobile Company. In 1909, two brothers created the car company. Their names were Frank and Morris Eckhart. The two ran a relatively successful business until World War I, when difficulties in obtaining raw materials forced the manufacturing plant to close. The company changed hands several times after that, until 1929, when entrepreneur Errett Cord arranged to buy and control the company. Errett Cord already owned the Cord Automobile company and Duesenberg Inc., both car manufacturers, and the company continued manufacturing and selling the three different brands (Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg) through 1937 when the Auburn Car company was shuttered for good.According to American-Automobiles.com, there were a total of 36 Auburn models built in 1933. The designation 8-101A was described as follows: The eight symbolized the number of cylinders while the 101 represented the amount of horsepower produced by the engine. The ?A? meant it was a custom car, or that it at least had some luxury features. So, while it is relatively straightforward to get some basic information on this model car, finding more specific accounts of the make and model was a bit of a head-scratcher.
