As one of the Korean leading manufacturers and distributors of power supplies based on R&D&＃39;s professional and cutting edge technology, 20 years working experience in Samsung R&D Center, TEVE has succeeded to develop non-chemical (non-electrolytic) contained LED Converter which could make it guarantee the life time more than 50,000 hours even under the extremely cold temperature, minus 50 degrees Celsius (-50C). [Technology background - Necessity of new development] Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are spreading over all lighting applications and it is considered as inevitable and powerful trend in lighting due to their outstanding advantages e.g. LEDs life time is very long, around 50,000 hours. LEDs theoretical luminous efficacy is the highest, around 150 lm/W. Chromatic variety, shock and vibration resistance, etc. Nevertheless, they need the development of new power supplies especially designed for boosting and taking advantage of their aforementioned characteristics. Besides, their system is completely different from the rest of lighting devices and, consequently, it should be also taken into account in the design of the converters used to drive them. As a result, many well-known topologies have been optimized or redesigned in order to be used in LED-lighting applications. Because the drivers should have the same advantages as LEDs have, the design should aim at high efficiency and high reliability as primary concerns. As a consequence, a very challengeable requirement imposed to these drivers is the removal of electrolytic capacitor in order to boost reliability and achieving a lifetime guarantee more than 50,000 hours. This implies the design of converters for AC-DC topologies with very high efficiency and without electrolytic capacitors so that their life time extended. As will be seen, this strongly required project has been achieved by TEVE !
