The root of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer (Araliaceae) is one of the most popular natural tonics which have been used in oriental countries.
Ginsan has been developed by the Laboratory of Immunology, Korea Cancer Center Hospital since 2001. Ginsan is a polysaccharide composition extracted from the root of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer.

Ginsan activated lymphocytes and stimulated lymphocytes proliferation to generate LAK (lymphokine- activated killer) cells which kill tumor cells without MHC-restriction. Ginsan also activated macrophages to produce nitrogen intermediates and become tumoricidal.

Ginsan inhibited metastasis in experimental model of B16-F10 melanoma and growth in Lewis lung cancer model, not only by intraperitoneal administration but also by oral dose and caused no harmful side effect.
Ginsan protected from lethal doses of irradiation and anti-cancer chemo- therapeutic agents by proliferating bone marrow cell, producing anti-oxidant enzymes, and inhibiting mutagenesis.

Ginsan protected from bacterial infection and showed anti-septicaemic effect by inhibiting the production of inflammatory cytokines.
Ginsan protected liver from CCl4 induced liver damage through blocking cytochrome P450 (CYP2E1) and chemokines production.
As a link in the chain of adjuvant cancer therapies combined use of ginsan with surgical therapy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy could display its true usefulness.
