Chilbo means "seven jewelries," referring to such valuables as gold, silver, glass, nacre, crystal, agate, and coral, which are known to originate from Egypt's Royal Palace about 5,000 years ago. A chilbo piece is created through several hightemperature (800~900 degrees) processes.

Chilbo is classified according to manufacturing technique employed in creating it: linear chilbo (those with silver lining), lineless chilbo made of enamel only, and pangeum chilbo made of punched metal. The main ingredients of chilbo enamel include silica, soda ash, borax, boric acid, and the enamel may be either made transparent or semi-transparent. These ingredients, when blended and crafted correctly, produce clear and brightly colored works.
